Description
GRAND-CARTERET (John) The Sign: Its History, Philosophy and Distinctive Features in Shops, Homes, on the Street and in Commercial Advertising in Lyon. Lively sketches by Gustave Girrane, documentary prints and antique items. Grenoble, Librairie Dauphinoise H. Falque and F. Perrin, and Moutiers, François Ducloz, 1902. One quarto volume, in marbled half-basane with corner pieces, ribbed spine, gilt title. Covers preserved. A fine publication, adorned with 15 bister-printed borders, 9 colour plates on tinted backgrounds, 222 in-text illustrations based on sketches by Gustave Girrane, and 145 in-text reproductions of antique prints and documents. First edition. History of shop signs and commercial advertising. In his preface, the author sets out his aim as follows: “This volume is twofold; by that I mean it is conceived from both a general and a specific perspective—general, because without going back to the Flood, without concerning myself with the Romans, I have sought to highlight what had, until now, scarcely been glimpsed: the philosophy and the many distinctive features of the shop sign; and specific, because for the modern section I have confined myself to a single city and a provincial town [], Lyon.” (Extract from the preface). Pages 395 to 448 contain a critical bibliography and iconography of shop signs in France and abroad. Chapter X deals with the shop signs of Lyon’s ‘drinking culture’ (alcohol, wine, beer); eccentric cabarets; bars; wine merchants; country cabarets and inns; Napoleonic signs; and classic cafés and brasseries in Lyon. A fine copy. SB
