Description
FAURE, Elie. 3 signed autograph letters addressed to Daniel Halévy. “You have acted, Sir, as a disloyal publisher and, more seriously still, as a bad colleague.” 4 pages in-4, comprising one sheet on lined paper (276 x 214 mm) and two sheets on paper with serrated margins (259 x 210 mm). On the reverse of the first letter, a handwritten note in another ageing hand: “Berth informs me of Sorel’s death”. “St-Aulaye” (Dordogne), undated [1922] and Paris “147 Boulevard Saint-Germain”, 21 November and 3 December 1923. Fold marks with two small tears on two sheets. The essayist and historian Élie Faure (1873–1937) is considering publishing his essays in the “Cahiers verts” series, which Grasset has just entrusted to Daniel Halévy. In the first, cordial letter, he congratulates his correspondent on his appointment as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1922. He enquires about the forthcoming publication of his essay on Montaigne. On 21 November 1923, he grew irritated by Daniel Halévy’s procrastination regarding publication deadlines. The second letter, dated 3 December, was a letter terminating their editorial relationship. “It was not I, Sir, who asked you to contribute to the *Cahiers Verts*. It was you—whose name and work were unknown to me just a moment before—who came to my home to seek my support for this as yet unlaunched collection [...] You are free not to like my writing. I understand that perfectly well, and I hold in the highest regard those who have the candour to say so, and even to put it in writing. But were you not even freer, when you did not know me, not to come and beg me to publish it under your name, only to then back out through a series of evasions and about-turns devoid of any elegance?"... Following this falling-out, Elie Faure published his essays with Georges Crès.
