Small 8vo, publisher’s binding in cream vellum, plain spine with title in black, title repeated on the upper cover adorned with a black-and-white illustration of ‘Pirate’s Chains’, publisher’s mark on the lower cover, black head edge, untrimmed. XIII and 120 pp., frontispiece and ten full-page black-and-white plates. In English. Stains on the binding, one loose plate, water damage to pages 2 to 7. First edition of this historical study devoted to the practice of ‘gibbeting’ in England, namely the public display of a condemned person’s body following their execution. This practice, which was more cruel than a deterrent, was abolished in 1834. Albert Hartshorne (1839–1910), an archaeologist and historian specialising in medieval antiquities and the social history of England, served as secretary to the Royal Archaeological Institute.
