First edition of this historical study devoted to the practice of ‘gibbeting’ in England, namely the public display of a condemned person’s body following their execution. This practice, which was more cruel than a deterrent, was abolished in 1834.
Albert Hartshorne (1839–1910), an archaeologist and historian specialising in medieval antiquities and the social history of England, served as secretary to the Royal Archaeological Institute.
