Quarto, full Jansenist midnight-blue morocco, ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed, covers and spine preserved. xxx pp., 48 colour plates within the text. A finely decorated edition featuring illustrations by Robert Engels (1866–1926), a German painter who produced one of his finest illustrations here. The text has been ‘revised’ by the philologist Joseph Bédier (1864–1938), a specialist in medieval literature. Limited edition of 650 numbered copies on Japanese paper; this is one of the 150 containing an additional black-and-white plate (no. 52). In excellent condition, in a sturdy Jansenist binding.
