Description
[REVOLUTION] ROLAND, Jeanne-Marie Phlipon, known as Mme. An Appeal to Impartial Posterity, by Citizen Roland, wife of the Minister of the Interior, or a collection of the writings she composed whilst detained in the prisons of the Abbey and Sainte-Pélagie; printed for the benefit of her only daughter, deprived of her parents’ fortune, whose assets remain under sequestration. First edition of this literary testament by Mrs Roland, wife of a Minister, muse of the Girondins, and victim of the Reign of Terror. Paris, published by Louvet, undated [1795]. 4 parts in 1 volume, in-8, orange paper binding, plain spine, handwritten title label on white paper, speckled edges. VIII-128; IV-106; (2)-116 and (4)-139 pp. Minor signs of wear, spine browned with slight cracking of the paper, paper missing from the title label, a few fox’s spots and a few browned pages, a faint watermark in the lower corner of the last 40 leaves without affecting the text, ink bleed from a note slipped between pages 14 and 15 of the first part. Posthumous first edition, published by the naturalist Augustin-Guillaume Bosc d’Antic at the request of his friend Mme Roland. The collection comprises memoirs on the writer’s private life, the history of her husband’s two ministries, historical notes, portraits and anecdotes. The daughter of a Parisian engraver, Mme Roland, née Jeanne Marie Phlipon (1754–1793), grew up with a love of literature and new ideas. She married the economist Jean-Marie Roland de La Platière (1734–1793), collaborating on his work and supporting the development of his political career. During the Revolution, Mr Roland was appointed Minister of Justice and then Minister of the Interior. As a hostess, Madame Roland became the muse of the Girondins. The Reign of Terror marked the end of the couple’s marriage: she was arrested and guillotined, whilst he took his own life shortly afterwards. In good condition.
