Description
[CYPRUS]. JANSSON, Jan. Cyprus Insula.
No place [Paris or Amsterdam], no publisher, no date [c. 1650–1700].
Copperplate engraving (38 x 50 cm), hand-coloured (added later) on laid paper (51 x 59 cm).
A few very slight tears at the margins of the sheet.
This map by the geographer Jan Jansson (1588–1664) was first published in his *Atlas Novus* of 1637. This copy comes from a French edition, probably from the late 17th century, with text on the reverse.
It is adorned with several ships, the coats of arms of the Ottoman Empire and the House of Lusignan, kings of Cyprus and Jerusalem, as well as Leda, struck by Cupid’s arrow and reclining on a shell drawn across the waves by two swans. The colour, with the exception of the island’s coastline, was added at a later date.
The map is in very good condition.
