Description
[REVOLUTION – MARIBON DE MONTAUT]. 29 laws or letters patent, including the printed decree on the abolition of the hereditary nobility, the one on the abolition of the annual levy on Jews, and a collection concerning the organisation of the judiciary.
Auch, published by J.P. Duprat, 1790–1791.
29 documents on small quarto sheets (approx. 24 x 19 cm), with engraved headers, all bearing the handwritten bookplate in the upper margin of the first sheet: ‘Mr Montaut, administrator of the district of Condom’.
A few leaves show foxing; some are frayed; a few leaves are discoloured.
A fine collection that belonged to Louis de Maribon de Montaut (1754–1842), a former musketeer who embraced revolutionary ideas as early as 1789. In September 1791, whilst serving as administrator of the district of Condom and lieutenant-colonel of the National Guard, he was elected deputy for the Gers to the National Assembly. Close to the Jacobins, he supported the Reign of Terror. Forced into exile in 1816, he returned to France following the July Revolution and spent his final days at the Château de Montaut, where he was born.
A rich collection containing two important documents:
- a printed document on the abolition of the hereditary nobility (“Letters Patent of the King, on a decree of the National Assembly, which abolishes the hereditary nobility, & stipulates that the titles of prince, duke, earl, marquis & other similar titles shall not be assumed by anyone, nor bestowed upon anyone”. 23 June 1790. 2 pp.)
- a printed document relating to the abolition of the annual levy on Jews (“Letters Patent of the King, concerning the decree of the National Assembly abolishing the rights of residence, protection, tolerance and similar levies on Jews”. 7 August 1790. 2 pp.)
And also a collection relating to the organisation of the judiciary enacted by the National Assembly in 1790:
- Proclamation by the King on the decrees of the National Assembly concerning the organisation of the judiciary. 24 August 1790. 16 pp.
- Proclamation by the King on decrees of the National Assembly following on from the decree concerning the organisation of the judiciary. 11 September 1790. 10 pp.
- Proclamation by the King, concerning a decree of the National Assembly containing additional articles on the judicial system. 4 pp.
- Proclamation by the King, concerning a decree of the National Assembly relating to the election of judges. 12 September 1790. 12 September 1790. 1 p.
- Proclamation by the King, on the decree of the National Assembly, stipulating that the presidents of departmental and district administrations are eligible for the posts of judges. 27 September 1790. 1 p.
- Proclamation by the King, concerning the decree of the National Assembly designating the towns where district courts are to be established. 28 August 1790. 15 pp.
- Act concerning the procedure for replacing judges who have not accepted their appointments. 10 November 1790. 3 pp.
- Act providing that half the salary of judges and the King’s commissioners, whose salary exceeds two thousand four hundred livres, shall be set aside and distributed as a contribution to public assistance. 5 November 1790. 2 pp.
- Act provisionally maintaining the status of district courts and administrations, and referring the various changes requested in this regard to subsequent legislatures. 10 December 1790. 2 pp.
- Act relating to the composition of the panels of the courts of appeal in each district. 1 December 1790. 2 pp.
- Act relating to the liquidation of the judicial offices. 10 January 1791. 2 pp.
A fine collection of legislative documents that once belonged to a political figure of the Revolution.
