Paris, Rothschild, 1888 Large 8vo, paperback, illustrated cover. XXVII and 266 pp., numerous bistre portraits on blue paper and numerous chromolithographic vignettes in the text. Spine slightly creased and browned, cover slightly frayed, a few foxing spots on the edges. First edition of this collection of biographical and critical articles by Baron de Vaux (1843–1915), a former cavalry non-commissioned officer and equestrian journalist, a colourful character who was also involved in several legal cases. It is richly illustrated by Gavarni, Crafty, Jeanniot, Rochegrosse, Courboin… Limited edition of 1,250 copies; this is one of the 970 numbered copies bound in imitation Japanese-style leather (no. 1212). In good condition.
