Description
BULLIARD, Pierre. Elementary Dictionary of Botany, or an alphabetical exposition of the principles of botany, and of all the terms, both French and Latin, used in the study of this science. Paris, printed by Crapelet, sold by Desray, Year VI, 1797. Small folio, black glazed half-basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets. XII–242 pp., 4 unnumbered folios (explanations of the illustrations) and 10 engraved plates. At the end, a catalogue of botanical books from the Baillère bookshop (4 pp.) Binding scuffed with scuff marks on the spine; some faint water stains in the margins of the plates. Second edition, illustrated with 10 separate plates, the first nine of which are printed in colour. The dictionary of Latin terms relating to the study of botany is printed in two columns on slightly bluish paper. Pierre Bulliard (1752–1793), a naturalist and populariser of science, published high-quality illustrated works at a lower cost. To achieve this, he was one of the first not to have to colour the illustrations by hand, instead adopting a printing technique developed in the previous century: the ‘poupée’ inking method perfected by Johannes Teyler. A fine copy.
