Quarto, red half-maroquin, ribbed spine, gilt head, untrimmed, illustrated cover and spine preserved. 355 pp., 63 drawings reproduced in black. Cover preserved but slightly soiled. First edition illustrated by F. Coindre, whose drawings vividly capture the working-class folk, the streets, the small trades and the slums of the capital. A study of the author’s life by Alfred Delvau. A friend of Baudelaire, Alexandre Privat d’Anglemont (1815–1859) is regarded as one of the finest chroniclers of ‘bohemian’ Paris. One of 50 copies printed on Japanese paper; this unnumbered copy contains a second state with notes. Vignette of a coat-of-arms ex-libris. A very fine copy, well bound.
