VIOLLET-LE-DUC, Eugène. A Critical Dictionary of French Furniture: From the Carolingian Period to the Renaissance. Paris, Gründ and Maguet, n.d. [c. 1879]. 6 tomes in 3 in-4 volumes, each bound in brown half-maroquin, ribbed spine, red headbands. Approximately 450–500 pages per tome (uncollated), with over 1,800 woodcut, steel engraving and chromolithographic illustrations. Minor signs of wear; paper slightly browned at the margins with small foxing spots. A fine edition of this dictionary, which was first published in instalments between 1858 and 1875. This monumental work on the history of the decorative arts, richly illustrated, is an essential reference for furniture and utensils, clothing, jewellery and toiletries, and weapons of war. Copies in fine condition.
