In-8, burgundy half-maroquin, smooth spine decorated with garlands, gilt fillets and fleurons. XVI and 392 pages, frontispiece and two engraved folding plates. Binding slightly rubbed, mainly on the covers, with a few scattered foxing spots. Indicated as a second edition. A fine frontispiece depicting an oriental coastal city and two folding maps (a planisphere of the Earth and an astrological chart of the heavens). A seminal work of deist thought, situated at the intersection of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, this philosophical and mystical essay enjoyed considerable success in France, England and the United States.
