A monumental edition of this highly detailed and richly illustrated history, all in uniform bindings bearing the Flammarion mark. Paris, Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1880–1885. 7 in-4 volumes, each bound in red half-maroquin with corner caps, ribbed spines and gilt heads. Bindings signed ‘Flammarion’. Approximately 700 pages per volume (not collated), with a great many illustrations in black and white and in colour. Normal wear and tear, mainly to the edges; the spine of volume 3 is slightly warped; some foxing, particularly in volume VII. A new, revised and expanded edition, enriched with approximately 3,000 engravings based on ancient models and 100 maps and plans.
