In-8, midnight blue half-shagreen, ribbed spine, panels decorated with small gilt metalwork, gilt head, untrimmed, covers preserved (front cover illustrated). 58 pp., numerous illustrations in the text. Some wear, mainly to the corners; covers slightly browned. A charming edition illustrated with delicate watercolours by Eugène Grivaz (1852–1915), engraved by Arents and printed in black, bistre or blue. This ‘bourgeois little story’, a satirical and gallant poem first published in 1857, was banned from sale due to its ‘rather risqué’ passages. Large ‘A. Rodelet’ bookplate on the back cover. A fine copy on Dutch laid paper, in a good binding.
