[PARIS] TISSANDIER, Gaston. The 300-metre Eiffel Tower. A description of the monument, its construction, its mechanical components, its purpose and its use. A rare first edition of one of the very first studies on the great architectural achievement of the 1889 World’s Fair, which has become the symbol of Paris. Paris, Masson, 1889. In-8, ebony half-maroquin with corner pieces, smooth spine with title running lengthwise, illustrated front cover and spine preserved. Binding signed ‘Atelier Lardenchet’. XII and 81 pp., frontispiece, a facsimile letter, 34 figures reproduced in black, both in the text and as inserts. A few scattered foxing spots. First edition of this study, featuring fine illustrations by Poyet, published in the year of the inauguration of the ‘Iron Lady’, originally named the ‘300-metre tower’. A science journalist and aeronaut, Gaston Tissandier (1843–1899) was the editor of the journal *La Nature* and one of the most active promoters of scientific progress in his day. An excellent copy, well bound.
