[CYPRUS – THE MIDDLE EAST]. DELISLE, Guillaume. General Map of Syria, Palestine and the Island of Cyprus, including parts of Asia Minor, Armenia, Mesopotamia, Arabia and Egypt, to be used in the history of the Crusades... Paris, Joseph Nicolas Delisle and Delamarche, 1764. Map engraved on copper (38 x 53 cm) and hand-coloured on laid paper (56 x 76 cm). Central crease, as is often the case, slight browning and a few faint foxing spots in the margins, a few rare foxing spots on the map itself, and the long margins very slightly frayed. This large map of the Near East comes from the archives of Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726), an astronomer and geographer, and is published here (probably for the first time) by his younger brother, Joseph Nicolas Delisle (1688–1768), who was also an astronomer and geographer. It depicts, with the coastline highlighted in colour, the various Christian kingdoms and principalities of the Crusades era, as well as the island of Cyprus and the southern coast of Anatolia. A very fine historical map.
