1 in-4 booklet (44 pp., printed blue cover); one engraved portrait and 100 plates reproduced as heliogravures; all housed in the publisher’s cardboard slipcase with flaps in green percaline, decorated with a black and gold design on the top cover.
Scuffing to the slipcase, one flap detached, foxing.
First edition of this album presenting, reproduced as heliogravures, the travel drawings and sketches by Karl Girardet (1813–1871) from between 1840 and 1850 in Switzerland, Egypt, Tyrol and Italy. The engraved portrait is by Robert Girardet and the heliogravures by Max Girardet, the painter’s nephew. An introduction by Auguste Bachelin (1830–1890), a Swiss art historian and painter.
Enclosed: the subscription form (two-page folio sheet).
Karl Girardet (1813–1871), who trained in Paris under Léon Cogniet, was the official court painter to Louis-Philippe. He distinguished himself in history painting, Romantic landscape and Orientalist scenes.
