Description
[OISE] MAYOR, J. and MARNAS, Marius. Pierrefonds, the Château of Louis d’Orléans. Versailles, Éditions artistiques et scientifiques, n.d. [c. 1920]. Folio, loose-leaf, in the publisher’s burgundy half-percale cardboard folder, with an illustrated front cover. 12 pp. and 35 plates of heliotype photographs. Cardboard cover rubbed at the corners and edges, and slightly browned at the margins; half-title page also browned. A fine album containing 35 photographs by Marius Marnas (1875–1944), photographer of national palaces and museums. Pierrefonds Castle is a medieval fortress built at the request of Louis d’Orléans to defend the region during the Hundred Years’ War. In 1617, on the orders of Louis XIII, the castle was largely dismantled. Left in a state of ruin, it was restored from 1857 onwards by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc at the request of Napoleon III, who transformed it into a spectacular reinterpretation of the medieval castle. A fine copy.
