First edition.
Albert Bouinais (1851–1895), a French officer and orientalist, took part in negotiations with the Chinese authorities in 1887 and subsequently accompanied a delegation to Beijing. In this essay, he recounts his mission and his journey, and describes China from various perspectives: trade, the army and navy, religion, diplomacy and the country’s European policy.
