[ALGERIA] SARRAILLON, Benjamin. *El Djezaïr*, Algiers. First edition of this tribute to Algiers, illustrated with 54 full-page lithographs. Copy on Arches vellum, first edition, enhanced with three graphite drawings. Algiers, B. Sarraillon, 1958. Large quarto, paperback, illustrated colour-printed hardback cover, Rhodoid, with a greige cloth slipcase. Unpaginated (approximately 70 pages), 54 lithographed plates and in-text illustrations, in black, monochrome or polychrome. Minor losses at the top and bottom of the spine. First edition of this illustrated travelogue by Benjamin Sarraillon (1901–1989), a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, who settled in the Algerian capital in 1924, where he opened a studio. An Orientalist painter recommended by Etienne Dinet, he devoted himself to capturing Algerian customs and traditions as faithfully as possible. Here he presents a collection of sketches drawn from life between 1924 and 1955. Limited to 650 copies, this one is one of 50 numbered copies on Arches pure rag vellum, first-grade paper, containing a signed graphite drawing. This copy is enhanced by an additional signed sheet containing two graphite sketches. In fine condition.
