A rare first edition in contemporary binding. Paris, Dalvy & Cie, 1890. In-8, burgundy half-shagreen, ribbed spine, double gilt fillet embellished with gilt flowers framing the panels, gilt edges, illustrated cover plates preserved. 8 unnumbered leaves (advertisements), IX and 200 pp. and 1 unnumbered leaf (advertisements). Photogravure portraits of the authors, black-and-white illustrations in the text and as inserts. Scuffing to the headbands, edges and covers; upper hinge worn (one advertising leaflet partially detached). First edition. Herbert Duncan (1862–1945), British champion, joined forces with Louis Suberbie, a specialist in sports training, to produce one of the first methodical manuals on physical preparation dedicated to cycling. A chapter on ‘general considerations’ is contributed by the champion Léon Hamelle (1867–1932). Preface by Dr Oscar Jennings. A fine copy in contemporary binding.
