Complete manuscript of these lectures on the fundamental principles of logic, written as part of scholastic teaching.
No place, no publisher, 1759–1760.
8vo, marbled calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with small gilt metal fittings, brown leather label inscribed ‘Logica’, speckled edges.
48 folios handwritten in black ink and 14 engravings.
In Latin.
Binding rubbed with scuffs, cracks at the joints, a few small foxing spots, a faint water stain at the top of the inner margins of the last 20 folios.
A fine manuscript of these ‘institiones philosopphiae practicae’ or courses in logic.
The handwriting, regular and meticulous, spans from November 1759 to March 1760, and the complete manual is divided as follows:
- preliminary notions
- prolegomena or preface (portrait of Plato,
- pars prima logicae: on the idea and its perception
- pars logicae secunda: on judgements
- tertia pars logicae: on reasoning
- quarta pars logicae: on method
- appendix.
An engraving of Saint Catherine, patron saint of philosophy students, opens the collection, which is peppered with portraits (Plato, Pyrrho, Socrates, Nicolas Malebranche, Aristotle, Descartes), an allegory of logic and philosophical representations such as Porphyry’s tree. Some of the engravings were printed by Hecquet, Montbard and ‘à l’Etoile’ on Rue Saint-Jacques in Paris.
On the first handwritten folio is the bookplate of ‘Stephanus de Rives’, which also appears on a manuscript on ethics held at the Sorbonne.
