Description
5 - A superb Tsarist badge of jeweller’s quality, enamelled to mark the centenary of the Sveaborg fortress (1808–908). A complex, domed badge featuring, at its centre, a smooth shield bearing the Cyrillic text ‘Sweaborg’ (the Finnish fortress of Suomenlinna)A double-headed eagle surmounts the badge and holds two flags in its talons (the Imperial Navy flag and the blue St Andrew’s Cross, a white cross on a red background); the shield rests on a bundle of weapons (shovel,crossed muskets, a sapper’s axe, a naval mine), whilst a golden wreath of laurel and oak leaves forms the base of the insignia; an enamelled knot ties the branches together and bears the dates ‘1808–1908’ on a red background ’. Fastened with a screw and a round nut with two lugs, clamping a domed, gilded backing plate bearing the manufacturer’s signature (E. Cortmanty). Dimensions: 60 mm x 30 mm. (Condition 1)
