Description
Bomb tail section – VIRE, 6 JUNE 1944 A historical artefact from the bombing of the town of Vire in Normandy on 6 June 1944. At around 8 pm, the US 8th Air Force, comprising 28 B-24 Liberator aircraft, bombed the town. This was followed at 2 am by 167 Lancaster, Halifax and Mosquito aircraft from the British Royal Air Force. Found with its bomb still intact due to a failure to detonate, it was defused and recovered by a local scrap dealer. It subsequently passed through the collections of several enthusiasts, until it reached its most recent owner, Mr HUS A from Vire. He donated it to the town of Vire in 2015. The bomb is on display near the tourist information office. Made of steel, height: 35 cm As is.
