Description
CHAPRON (Nicolas). SACRAE HISTORIAE ACTA A RAPHAELE URBIN. In Vaticanis Xystis ad picturae miraculum expressa. Rome, sne., 1649. Large quarto Italian style marbled brown calf, boards decorated with 2 frames of gilt garlands and gilt corner irons with gilt arms in the centre and the gilt inscription "Derde Prys / Anno 1776" (18th century Dutch binding). First board soiled with trace of paper label, tear without missing plate 15, brown spotting in lower margin of engraved title and plates 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8. FIRST EDITION of this BEAUTIFUL SUITE reproducing the "Vatican Lodges" engraved by Nicolas CHAPRON (1612-1656) after Raphael. One page of handwritten ex-dono, an engraved TITLE and 50 [of 52] PLATES numbered 1 to 52 (size of plates: 43 X 32.5 cm approx.). Missing plates 6 and 7 which have been torn off. The text on the manuscript page written in Dutch is as follows: "Derde Prys van de Teken Akademie binnen Haerlem op den 22 april 1776 toegewezen aan Albertus Woortman, en ann denzchen Plechtig overgegeven op den ss. July daar ann volgende" ["Third prize of the Haarlem Academy of Fine Arts, awarded on 22 April 1776 to Albertus Woortman, and solemnly presented to him on the following 2 July"]. The arms reproduced on the plates are probably those of the Academy of Fine Arts of the city of Haarlem, in the Netherlands. ¶ Brunet, 1108.
