FALDA (Giovanni Battista). IL NUOVO TEATRO DELLE FABRICHE, ET EDIFICII, IN PROSPETTIVA DI ROMA MODERNA. Roma, Giovanni Jacomo Rossi, 1665-1699 [for the first 4 parts], 1739 [for the 5th and last]. Five parts in two quarto volumes Italian style (44 X 30 cm approx.) ½ tan basane, marbled paper boards, spine ribbed, red edges (Binding of the late eighteenth century). 1st part: 35 plates numbered from 1 to 35, including a dedication page and a title page - 2nd part: 17 plates numbered from 1 to 17, including a dedication page - 3rd part: 38 plates numbered from 1 to 38, including a dedication page and a title page - 4th part: 52 plates numbered 1 to 52, including a dedication page and a title page - Part 5: 29/30 plates numbered 1 to 30 [MISSING plate no. 5], including a dedication page and a title page. Scattered foxing, on the whole marginal, brown stains in the corners of the lateral margin of plates 33 to 38 of part 3, tears and tears in the spine of the 2nd volume. A MAGNIFICENT WORK which constitutes an ESSENTIAL TESTIMONY on the TOPOGRAPHY AND ARCHITECTURE OF THE RENAISSANCE IN ROME. It is very rare complete with all 5 parts. The supplement published in 1739 by Domenico Campiglia, which constitutes the fifth and final part of this work, is often missing, as it was printed more than 70 years after the first part. The first three parts were drawn and engraved by Giovanni Battista FALDA, the fourth by Alessandro SPECCHI. The work contains 171 [of 172] MAGNIFICENT copper-engraved plates, all numbered and captioned in Italian: plate 5 of the 5th and final part is unfortunately MISSING. Each part has its own theme: part 1 describes the squares, streets and buildings of the Eternal City, part 2 explores the surroundings of Rome, part 3 is devoted to churches, part 4 to palaces and part 5 to palaces and various views of emblematic buildings (Trevi Fountain, Vatican Library, etc.). A SUPERB EXAMPLE, with fine margins, from the LIBRARY of the naturalist and professor of natural sciences, Dr Johann M. W. BAUMANN (1805-1862), with his engraved bookplate pasted on the 1st spine of each volume. ¶ Brunet, II-1172 - Fowler, 116 - Katalog Berlin, 2666 (identical collation) - Catalogo Cicognara, 3865 (under the title "Vedute delle fabbriche, piazze, strade, fatte fatto nuovo in Roma" with identical collation) - Rossetti, 4826.
