CHAVAILLON Théogène (1884–1958) Study of a reclining woman, charcoal and chalk drawing, signed and dated ‘June 1928’ in the bottom left-hand corner – 28 x 40.5 cm. + “Abbaye de Noirlac”, charcoal and chalk drawing, signed and inscribed in the lower left-hand corner and located and dated “Sep 1923” in the upper right-hand corner – 24 x 32 cm. + Two watercolours, signed in the bottom right-hand corner; one labelled “Dun-sur-Auron Vieille Maison du XV°” and dated “Sept 1931”, and the other labelled “Dun-sur-Auron Le vieux château” and dated “Septembre 1931” - 35 x 27 cm (one has a small tear)
Théogène Chavaillon, an unconventional pharmacist born in Saint-Amand-Montrond on 7 April 1884, founder of the art school and the Musée Saint Vic in Saint-Amand-Montrond, and the first curator of the municipal museum, he worked to promote culture in Saint-Amand-Montrond from the 1920s until his death in 1958.
