Description
SENOUFO, Côte d’Ivoire.
Hardwood, with a black patina from wear.
Two ‘Tefalipitya’ farming staffs topped with two female figures, one standing with a scarified face and her hands on her hips, the other seated on a stool with her hands resting on her knees.
This type of staff honoured the finest ‘sambali’ farmer, the champion of the harvest, and the female figure above always represents a ‘pitya’, a young, unmarried woman at the height of her beauty, whom these very ‘champions’ might hope to marry.
First half of the 20th century or earlier.
L. 99.5 cm and 130 cm.
(Part of the handle of one is missing; minor chips).
Provenance: Collection of a family spanning two generations of notaries.
