SWITZERLAND – CANTON OF SCHWYTZ – 5 francs commemorating the Federal Shooting Competition in Schwyz, 1867 – Bern. Obverse: A heraldic lion facing right, holding a sword and supporting the coat of arms of the Canton of Schwyz, resting on a trophy of arms comprising, amongst other things, a bow, a quiver and arrows. The two Mythen mountains appear in the background. Legend: ‘KANTON SCHWYZ’. Signed A. BOVY. Reverse: Federal coat of arms bearing the Swiss cross, surrounded by a laurel wreath and set against a large trophy of arms, flags, rifles and military regalia. Inscription: ‘EIDGENÖSSISCHES SCHÜTZENFEST IN SCHWYZ 1867’. Denomination ‘5 Fr.’ in the exergue. Edge: Fluted. Gross weight: 25.00 g. Metal and fineness: 900 silver. Diameter: 37 mm. Corner orientation: 6 o’clock. Engraver: Antoine Bovy. Condition: TTB+; grey patina, slight wear on the raised relief and a few marks. References: HMZ 2# 1343g; Richter SS# 1070a. Mintage: 8,000 copies. Historical note: Issued for the 1867 Swiss Federal Shooting Competition in Schwyz, this shooting thaler adopts the size, weight and fineness of the 5 Swiss franc note then in circulation. Antoine Bovy’s design combines the coat of arms of Schwyz with military and federal motifs. Mintage: 8,000 copies.
