Description
SWITZERLAND – LAUSANNE – 5-franc silver medal from the 1876 Federal Shooting Competition in Lausanne. Obverse: Personifications of the Swiss Confederation and the Canton of Vaud holding hands in front of a bundle of flags and civic emblems. On the left, vine branches and the Vaud coat of arms; on the right, a mountainous landscape and the federal coat of arms. Inscription: ‘TO BE · STRONG · LET US BE · UNITED’. In the centre, ‘FREEDOM AND FATHERLAND’; in the exergue, the dates ‘1836–1876’, the signature DURUSSEL and the denomination ‘5 F ’. Reverse: Panoramic view of Lausanne dominated by the cathedral, above the arches of the Grand-Pont. Inscription: ‘1876 FEDERAL SHOOTING COMPETITION IN LAUSANNE’. Edge: Fluted. Gross weight: 24.60 g. Metal and fineness: 900 silver. Diameter: 38 mm. Condition: TTB+; uniform grey patina. Designer: Édouard Durussel. References: HMZ 2# 1343k; Richter SS# 1560. Historical note: Issued to mark the 1876 Federal Shooting Competition in Lausanne, this 5-franc coin also commemorates the Lausanne edition of 1836, the date of which appears on the obverse. The handshake between Helvetia and the personification of Vaud embodies the motto ‘To be strong, let us be united’.
