BELGIUM – LEOPOLD I – Set of two 5-franc coins, 1847 and 1849 – Brussels. 5 francs 1847, laureate head Obverse: Laureate head of Leopold I facing left, hair encircled by an oak wreath tied at the nape of the neck; inscription ‘LEOPOLD PREMIER ROI DES BELGES’. Signed BRAEMT F. de Joseph-Pierre Braemt. Reverse: Denomination ‘5 FRANCS’ and the year 1847 in the centre, surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves and acorns; a star in the exergue. Edge: Raised inscription ‘GOD PROTECTS BELGIUM’. References: KM# 3; Morin 13. Mintage: 699,601 copies. 5 francs 1849, bareheaded Obverse: Bareheaded head of Leopold I facing left; inscription ‘LEOPOLD PREMIER ROI DES BELGES’. Signature L. WIENER. Reverse: Crowned coat of arms of the Kingdom of Belgium, surrounded by plant branches; denomination ‘5 F ’ on either side, the motto ‘L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE’ and the year 1849 in the exergue.
