Description
SWITZERLAND – CANTON OF VAUD – 1 batzen, 1831 – Concordat type. Obverse: Shield bearing the coat of arms of the Canton of Vaud with the motto ‘LIBERTÉ / ET / PATRIE’, surrounded by two laurel branches. Peripheral inscription: ‘CANTON OF VAUD · 1831’. In the exergue: ‘1 · BATZ’. Reverse: An ornate large cross set within a quatrefoil, bearing the letter C in its centre. Peripheral : ‘LES CANTONS CONCORDANTS DE LA SUISSE’. Edge: Smooth. Gross weight: 2.60 g. Metal and fineness: Billon, 150 silver. Diameter: 25 mm. Thickness: approx. 0.5 mm. Face value: 1 batzen, equivalent to 1/10 of a Vaud franc. Orientation: Coin strike, 6 o’clock. Strike quality: Circulation coin, Monetary Concordat type. Condition: TTB+/SUP; sharp relief, silvery-grey patina with golden highlights; a few superficial marks, irregularities in the blank and a small chip at 12 o’clock. References: HMZ 2# 1004x; Lavanchy 20h. Historical note: This issue stems from the Monetary Concordat of 17 April 1825, concluded between several cantons to harmonise their currencies. The 1 Vaud batzen of this type were minted from 1826 to 1834; Lavanchy notes that in 1831 some specimens were re-struck on earlier coins.
