BIOGRAPHY: Mado Jolain (1921–2019) was a French ceramicist whose work was firmly rooted in the post-war revival of French ceramics. Working in her own studio from the 1950s onwards, she developed a resolutely modernist artistic language: organic and asymmetrical forms, chamotte stoneware, and matt glazes in muted shades of ochre, grey and brown. Her work, long overlooked, has been the subject of a significant re-evaluation since the 2010s.
She belongs to a generation of French ceramicists who profoundly revitalised the craft after 1945: Georges Jouve (1910–1964), a leading figure of this period, whose clean-lined forms and deep glazes now command the highest prices; Roger Capron (1922–2006) and Jean Derval (1925–2010), both based in Vallauris; and Pol Chambost (1906–1983), whose Parisian body of work combines formal elegance with a refined colour palette.
Jolain shares with these artists a taste for textured surfaces and free-form shapes, whilst maintaining a sense of restraint and discretion that sets his work apart.
