BIOGRAPHY: “An artist at heart, Jean Rouppert devoted his entire life to creation, as evidenced by the significance of the body of work he left behind. His career, the people he met and his aesthetic affinities, as well as the historical context in which he operated, place him, in his own way, within a broader movement at the turn of the 20th century, which recognised the decorative arts on a par with painting and sculpture.
Originally from Lorraine, Jean Rouppert was influenced by Germanic and Lorrain art of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, both in terms of technique – line drawing in pen and direct woodcarving – and in many of his favourite themes. He admired the draughtsmen, painters and engravers of the 15th–17th centuries: Dürer, Grünewald, Callot and Deruet, whose works he studied as part of his profession as a decorative artist.
He was also drawn to the Romantic, Neo-Gothic and Symbolist movements: this explains why his work features so many nocturnal landscapes, castles, medieval villages and buildings, studies of historical costumes, and fauns and satyrs."
