HISTORICAL COMMENTARY: Germany in the 1930s was the first state to approach individual camouflage as a scientific discipline. In 1935, the SS-Verfügungstruppe commissioned Professor Johann Georg Otto Schick, with the assistance of engineer Wilhelm Brandt, to carry out a systematic study of visual perception in vegetated environments: the play of light through the foliage, the fragmentation of silhouettes, and seasonal colour variations. This resulted, as early as 1937, in an unprecedented family of patterns — the Platanenmuster (plane tree), followed by the Rauchtarnmuster with its smoky outlines, and, from 1942, the Eichenlaubmuster, the ‘oak leaf’ pattern reproduced on this item.
Two innovations set these fabrics apart. The first is their reversibility: each garment features a spring side, predominantly green, and an autumn side in ochre and brown tones, printed onto duck cotton canvas using engraved copper rollers — a costly process that always limited production. The second is as much legal as it is technical: the patterns were patented and reserved exclusively for the Waffen-SS, forcing the Wehrmacht to develop its own geometric camouflage patterns in parallel (the Splittermuster, worn in particular by Luftwaffe paratroopers, and later the Sumpfmuster). Camouflage thus became, remarkably, a marker of affiliation before it was a tool of war.
