BIOGRAPHY: Mado Jolain (1921–2019) was one of the leading figures in the post-war revival of French ceramics. Trained at the École nationale supérieure des Arts décoratifs in Paris and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, she exhibited her first works as early as 1948 and set up her studio in Montrouge in 1950.
In contrast to the industrial production that was then in full swing, she favoured a craft-based approach to ceramics, developing a personal style characterised by simple, organic forms, asymmetrical volumes and surfaces with deliberately irregular textures. Stoneware and chamotte-based clays are brought to life with matt or nuanced glazes, in a characteristic palette of ochres, browns, greys and natural tones.
From the late 1950s, having settled in Champigny-sur-Marne, she also produced a significant body of work for the home and garden: pots, planters, window boxes and sculptural pieces in which the vessel itself becomes a true work of art.
Long remaining relatively unknown, her work has undergone a significant rediscovery since the 2010s and is now fully recognised as part of the history of French ceramics from the 1950s to the 1970s.
