OIVA TOIKKA - IITTALA (manufacturer), hand-blown glass turtle dove with a midnight blue speckled pattern, the beak made of clear glass and hot-fitted, from the ‘Birds by Toikka’ series, circa 1970, signature and manufacturer’s label on the base - Approx. L 22 cm x H 13 cm x W 8 cm (in good overall condition) COMMENT: In 1972, the Finnish designer Oiva Toikka (1931–2019) created his first blown-glass birds at the Nuutajärvi glassworks. This collection, which has become iconic in Finnish glass design under the name ‘Birds by Toikka’, would go on to produce several hundred different designs. Manufactured at Nuutajärvi until 2014, the birds have since been produced at the Iittala glassworks.
