Description
DOGON
Wood, pigments.
This beautiful, ancient ‘Sirige’ mask (meaning ‘multi-storey house’) is considered one of the most spectacular in Dogon masquerades, as its sheer size demands great strength and dexterity from the wearer.
Our example, crafted in the traditional style, has been worn by several bearers over the years during ceremonies of the ‘Awa’ society. It features a stylised face surmounted by three openwork blades, each representing a storey. Each storey symbolises the knowledge acquired during the initiation rite marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. Awa Wood
