DOGON, Bandiagara region, Mali. Wood, polychrome natural pigments. ‘Kanaga’ dance mask used by members of the Awa society, particularly during the dama rituals honouring the dead. Evoking the creator god Amma, it depicts a stylised human face surmounted by a double-cross superstructure symbolising the ‘Kommolo Tebu’.
