Description
Hunting or game-hunting dagger, tang made of deer antler, guard with inverted, hoof-shaped quillons, blade with two fuller grooves, engraved decoration and signed ‘Andrea Ferrara’, leather and brass scabbard, L: approx. 74 cm; blade: approx. 45.5 cm. Scottish craftsmanship. Signs of wear and minor restoration work. Andrea Ferrara, originally from Veneto, produced numerous blades in Scotland, notably for broadswords (incorrectly referred to as claymores), although his life remains shrouded in mystery and is relatively little known; Walter Scott mentions him and states that a blade signed ‘Ferarra’ was a mark of excellence and quality.
