A camel-driver’s bag or Tuareg saddle bag made of leather, decorated with polychrome motifs, bearing the inscription in ink ‘General of the Army Gouraud’, as well as a visiting card belonging to the general with the handwritten inscription ‘Conqueror of the Dardanelles 1914–1918’, 80 x 48 cm. Henri Gouraud (1867–1946), a General of the Army, took part in French colonisation (Sudan, Mauritania, Chad, Morocco), fought at the Dardanelles (where he lost his right arm) and in the Argonne and in Syria-Cilicia, served as military governor of Paris and was close to leading military and colonial figures of his time: Mangin, Lyautey, Galliéni, etc.
