Voluntary lot
Description
An antique dagger, typical of the Second World War, of the commando type, with a very sturdy steel blade made from a file, brass and aluminium handle, approx. 32.5 cm in length with a blade of approx. 21.5 cm, complete with a leather sheath made from military leather scraps, aged patina, no play. Improvised craftsmen, field armourers or skilled soldiers would salvage modern materials such as aircraft-grade aluminium (often from the wrecks of downed aircraft) to cast or turn new, unbreakable handles. These are known as ‘theatre knives’.
