Description
Henri HOURTAL (painter from Carcassonne) print: ‘Medieval City’, 25 cm x 33 cm, as shown Henri Hourtal was born in Carcassonne on 17 March 1877 to Antoine, a plasterer, and Marie-Louise Baux, a shopkeeper. Nothing is known about his early life, nor how he developed his talent for drawing. *Le Courrier de l’Aude* reports that in May 1897 he was awarded a municipal scholarship of 400 francs, following his admission to the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse. Four years earlier, when he was just 16 years old, he exhibited a landscape at the Société des Beaux-Arts in Narbonne. After Toulouse, Hourtal moved to the capital and took private lessons at the Académie Julian; from 1904 onwards, he exhibited at the Indépendants, the Artistes Français and the Salon d’Automne.  A painter classified as a Post-Impressionist and Orientalist, trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, he was a regular exhibitor at the Galerie Georges Petit and at the Salons d’Automne and des Indépendants from 1905 onwards.
