Douai was occupied by the Germans under a military administrative regime. The mayor was in office but was under the control of a military governor. During those years, there were numerous restrictions, which were announced via posters. An unknown person tore this one down. Removed clandestinely, it bears the physical marks of having been torn down. “ORDINANCE CONCERNING THE PRICES OF ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES”, signed in Douai by the stage commander (i.e. the Kommandantur), dated 12 November 1915, size 56 x 40 cm; see the photograph.
