Description
[YPRES] – The siege of Ypres by the French, on the night of 24–25 March 1678. No place, no publisher, c. 1750; 330/470 mm, one sheet, coloured contemporary and mounted. A military perspective view of the siege of Ypres in Belgium. These perspective views are coloured engravings; they were generally produced between 1740 and 1820, and their format ranges from small folio to large folio. In all cases, these ‘optical views’ depict the most popular tourist spots in European cities and are animated (featuring figures and carriages in the foreground). Numerous publishers competed to sell these views, which were highly sought-after at the time; these engravings were designed to be projected onto walls using a light-projecting device that employed mirrors and lenses.
