Justin the Philosopher and Martyr’s Defence I on Behalf of Christians before the Roman Senate. Justin the Philosopher and Martyr’s Exhortatory Oration to the Nations. Book by Justin the Philosopher and Martyr on the Exposition of the Faith Concerning the True and Right Confession, that is, on the Holy Trinity and its Essence. Explanations by Justin the Philosopher and Martyr of the questions posed by the Gentiles to Christians concerning the void in the body, God, and the resurrection of the dead. Book by Justin the Philosopher and Martyr on the Refutation and Critique of Certain Decrees and Sentences of Aristotle. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1551–1554; folio, VIII-315 + XIV-127 + 67 + 35 + 50 + 91 + 80 + 50 + index, contemporary full calf binding, spine decorated with six raised bands, edges painted red, unidentified coat of arms on the covers. Robert Étienne was one of the most famous Parisian printers; he established himself as the printer of Hebrew, Latin and Greek texts to such an extent that Francis I appointed him royal printer in 1539. He married the daughter of the printer Josse Bade. His New Testament, printed in Greek in 1550, is regarded as one of the finest books ever printed in Greek. Théodore de Bèze, Jean Dorat and Sainte-Marthe praised it highly. Jacques-Auguste de Thou ranked him above Aldus Manutius and Johann Froben, adding ‘that France and the Christian world owe him more gratitude than to the greatest generals, and that he has done more to immortalise the reign of Francis I than even the finest deeds of that prince’. His printer’s mark is an olive tree with several branches extending from it. He collaborated with Claude Garamont on a typeface of Greek characters known as the ‘King’s Greek’. Robert Étienne was forced to leave France for Geneva because of his sympathies for the Reformation. A fine edition of Saint Justin.
