Description
MARMONTEL – Belisaire. Paris: Chez Merlin, 1767; in-12, X-241 pp., contemporary full marbled brown calf binding, spine decorated with five raised bands, edges painted red, title label in red morocco. Jean-François Marmontel was an 18th-century writer. He published novels, historical essays, poetry and plays; he even contributed to the Encyclopédie and was very close to Voltaire. During the Revolution, he became close to Necker and was often suspected by the revolutionaries of being a sympathiser of the royalists. *Le Bélisaire*, a novel advocating religious freedom, earned him the wrath of the clergy and the censors. However, the censorship only served to boost the book’s publicity and success.
