Description
HANOTAUX (Gabriel) - An Illustrated History of the First World War. Paris, Gounouilhou, 1915–1922; folio format, approximately 300 pp. per volume, marbled half-calf bindings, spines with four raised bands, title and volume number labels in green leather. All 17 volumes. Gabriel-Albert-Auguste Hanotaux was a French diplomat, historian and politician, born in Beaurevoir (Aisne) on 19 November 1853 and died in Paris on 11 April 1944 (aged 90). He served as secretary to Jules Derry, as a Member of Parliament for the Aisne constituency, and as Minister for Foreign Affairs. He was elected to the Académie française in 1897. An excellent work on the First World War. The only work capable of rivalling the volumes of *L’Illustration, 1914–1919*. Numerous photographs. Volumes 9 and 10 are in fair condition. The other volumes are in good condition. A quotation from Mirabeau is inscribed on the first blank page: ‘Generally speaking, my friend, war is the last resort of the imprudent and the foolish’; another hand notes that this annotation is in the author’s own hand… A complete set of 17 volumes bound as 10 volumes.
