Description
LITTRÉ (Émile) – Dictionary of the French Language. Covering terminology, grammar, word meanings, historical background and etymology, followed by the Etymological Dictionary of Words of Eastern Origin (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish, Malay). Paris, Hachette, c. 1876; folio, 2080 + 2628 + 375 (supplement) + VI-84 pp. (words of Eastern origin), publisher’s bottle-green half-shagreen bindings, smooth stamped spines, stamped percaline covers. All 5 volumes. In addition to being a lexicographer so renowned that his life’s work, his *Dictionnaire* (commonly known as the *Littré*), was named after him. Paul-Émile Littré (1801–1881) was a journalist, translator, Freemason and revolutionary. He was elected to the National Assembly and, whilst serving as a senator, remained true to his Comtist and materialist convictions. On the eve of his death, his family (his wife and daughter) persuaded him to convert, and he was given a Catholic funeral. In very good condition.
