Description
MARTIN (Henri) – A Popular History of France, from the Earliest Times to the Present Day. Paris, Furne and Jouvet, 1880; quarto, approx. 10,000 pp., navy blue half-calf bindings, spines decorated with five raised bands, marbled edges, title labels in red morocco. All 7 volumes. Very good condition, with numerous engravings within the text. Henri Martin was born in Saint-Quentin in 1810 and died in Passy in 1883. He published the *Histoire de la France* and was awarded a prize of 20,000 francs by the Institut in 1869 for this work. This history is best known for the final volumes of the *Histoire de France du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle*. The early part of this history suffers from gaps, and Henri Martin injects his own political views into it. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Paris, a member of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques and the Académie Française, as well as a senator for the Aisne.
